Perceptions
When I create my works, I might have an idea of what I want to express – but in the end, the final interpretation is up to you as the viewer. The idea that the same picture can be seen in many different ways is a source of endless fascination to me. In this series, I have chosen pictures that in some way or another explore the meaning of perception.
Enjoy!
Reflecting
The picture plays with the boundaries between perception and reality. The girls are connected but still apart. One is looking at the other, who is trying to make eye contact with us. Or possibly, there's just one girl, casting a skewed reflection, trying to find herself in the mirror-like structure in the center of the picture. Casting you, the viewer, in the role of the voyeur.
Home
Hopefully, everybody knows the happy feeling of coming home. In this picture, I have tried to convey the feeling of arriving at the place you belong. The sky is grey, the trees are naked, the sun is bleak. But the house is glowing with the same color as the person's head. This is where he or she belongs.
Poppy and the frog
Every summer, the poppies glow red in the fields and along the roads near my home. They are incredibly beautiful. I used them as inspiration – and got a little help from theDanish language. In Danish, the word for seed and frog is the same – "frø" – so I got a very interesting hybrid to use as a base for developing this fun and lighthearted picture.
Apparition
I am not superstitious, but when twilight turns into night, and the shadows seem to form strange shapes, I understand the appeal that ghost stories have had through the centuries. This picture is my take on the unexpected, using some classic elements: the full moon, the black cat, the darkened house – and of course, the woman who seemingly appears out of nowhere.
End of the road
I like the duality in this picture – to me, the solitude of the building is appealing. After living in the big city most of my life, I enjoy the peace and quiet in my countryside home after living in the big city. To others, the mood might be more melancholic, showing an unwanted loneliness in the bleak sky and the almost otherworldly fields. What do you see at the end of the road?
A real catch
The woman is sitting at a restaurant table, eyes telling exactly how she feels about the situation. Most people have experienced meeting people where they thought 'well, this is a real catch' – whether it is a not-so-great date or just a boring or awkward dining companion at a social function. Working with that expression gave me this absurd and very fun picture that pokes fun at life's unpredictability and the demands of the social scene.
