Left
We get into the story when most of it has already happened. Someone has left, and someone has been left behind. Who, what and why remain untold. But we share the feeling of not knowing what's waiting down the street, around the corner, with the person in the picture.
Old haunts
Most of us have familiar places that somehow fell out of view. Maybe we moved away, got a new job, found new habits. But sometimes we return, willingly or by chance. These old haunts carry memories and can evoke certain feelings; nostalgia, joy, longing, dread. I have tried to encapsulate the feeling of rediscovering places from your past in this picture.
In the dead of night
Working late on this picture with the blackbirds still singing in our garden in the bright May night put me in a special mood. The picture to me carries both pain, defiance, hope and vulnerability, so the lines ”Blackbird singing in the dead of night/Take these broken wings and learn to fly” from ”Blackbird” by The Beatles naturally came to my mind.
After a rain
Getting caught in the rain is usually not a pleasure. But the moment the rain stops, the sun breaks through to give the clouds a golden tint and you can enjoy the freshness of what feels like a brand-new day, making it almost worth it.
Breakaway
At first glance it's a girl with butterfly wings. But looking closer, you might see two beings; the girl, standing still, and the butterfly, preparing to move away. I have tried to create a mixture of sadness and hope – of saying goodbye to what once was and meeting the unknown with hope and courage.
A new morning
Once again, we only get a snapshot, a short glimpse of the whole story. But we get a hunch that it is a moment of hope. There are always new beginnings, new ways to find the quiet strength in shared moments.
